Recently several of the good members here have been posting their police/ highway patrol cars. I have one that I have wondered about, the Rextoys (France) 1940 Packard Super 8 California Highway Patrol. (click on picture for enlargement.)
CHP Police Car site has a fine year-by-year listing of the brand of cars purchased by California for this use, but 1940 is one of the few years with "unknown" listed. I also know that Rextoys was adept at changing colors to bring in more buyers. I think this version dates to the late 1990s. So, for you highway patrol experts, is this a realistic model? (I have also seen pictures of a model '40 Ford coupe decked out in the CHP logo by Motormax, but larger than 1/43.)
Where did Packard sit price wise compared to Ford & Chevrolet? Seems to me no local/city/state would use taxpayer money to buy a high end vehicle for patrol/traffic purposes. Thoughts? They did use a Chrysler Imperial early on, however. Maybe I just answered my question.
This was before "fleet" prices, with stripped cars like taxi/livery and police cars.
...and they used Volvo for one year (1999).
The officers liked it and wanted it to continue, but Volvo discontinued that model and the replacement was more expensive.
