Two good models! As I remember, the fiberglass cover over the T-Bird's rear seat was an expensive option, but since the rear seat could not be used, the cover was often left behind and soon forgotten.

I have owned my 63 Sports Roadster for thirty years and have never heard that. Actually there are more clones than original Roadsters out there as people buy after market tonneau covers for their convertibles to replicate a Sports Roadster. Yes it was an expensive option when the cars were new but there are other things in the Roadster package beside the tonneau cover including the KH wheels and grab bar on the passenger side dash. Incidently,looking at comparable condition cars, the documented Roadsters sell for an average 3 to 4 times more than the convertibles. There is a Sports Roadster Society that requires strict documentation before a car is certified.

Bob, your many years of ownership give your expertise validity. I'm sure your response is more worthy than my faulty recollections. Enjoy your fine old T-Bird in good health.

David it is true that the tonneau limits the use of the car to only two persons when in place.

What brought about the Sports Roadster in 1962 was an outcry from many T-Bird owners for a sporty two place roadster as a remembrance to the baby birds from 55-57. Lee Iaccoca got tired of hearing it and directed his staff to come up with something to quiet folks. While the Sports Roadsters could hardly be seen as anything near the baby birds it seemed to do the trick. As only 1427 1962s and 455 1963s were built it would hardly appear that the "many" were hardly "many". Should you ever get over to Mississippi It would be my honor to take you for a ride in my car and a tour of my collection.
