PIC: Re: the Borgward thread below

Borgward has reconstituted itself, been absorbed by a Chinese conglomerate, and is now producing vehicles again. Here's a link to the new company's site. Their current offerings are (surprise!) a line of SUV's, the BX5, BX6 & BX7. I've never seen one but I understand they are premium quality offerings.

It's all relative.

A descendent of Carl Borgward has licensed the family name to a Chinese car company, which is hoping the Borgward name will give them some instant credibility when they begin selling their vehicles in Europe.

BTW, the old Borgward factory building in Bremen is now used by Mercedes-Benz!

BMW got the Borgward engineers; M-B got the buildings.

The Chinese just get the name.

I doubt that the Borgward name will be remembered by the younger...

car buying generation who have no interest in cars, seeing them as modes of transport. The enthusiasts who do remember the fine cars Borgward made won't bite, preferring established makes like BMW, Volvo, etc. Just my thoughts

The new company was actually started by the original family.

"In 2008, the Borgward Group AG was formed in Lucerne by Christian Borgward (grandson of Carl F. W. Borgward) and Karlheinz L. Kn?ss. The new company later moved to Stuttgart. With both investment and manufacture by Beiqi Foton Motor (a subsidiary of BAIC, a major Chinese automotive group), the Borgward group had started to sell SUVs by January 2017."

And all was smoke, mirrors, and vapor...

Until the Chinese bit and licensed the Borgward name in 2015, and then began building vehicles in China in 2017.

Effective November 6, 2018, Xiuzhan Zhu is now CEO of Borgward Group AG.

If he's a blood relative of Carl F.W. Borgward, he's gotta be a pretty distant one!

EU

You are likely correct on those points, John.

It is the registered EU address the company has that will be the most useful thing in helping the Chinese owners of Borgward AG establish a beachead in Europe.

Tax advantages, too, since it is a European company and not "REALLY" a Chinese company in European clothing, is it?

The old story of The Trojan Horse comes to mind...

A local dealer here sells MGs. They seem fairly popular.
