Before painting a model, it is best to sample the paint along with the primer that you will be using. On many occasions I have been surprised to find that the color is not what I had hoped. Sometimes, I can make that correction by simply changing the primer shade from dark to white or vis versa. Other times, I have to experiment by adding other colors to the paint. It is a good idea to keep notes of the ingredients so that when you find the right color, you can duplicate it on the model. I use plastic spoons to sample primers/base coats .I then number each spoon which references to a book where I keep details of

all the ingredients, including paint manufacturer, color, number of drops of paint added if applicable. I usually follow up by clear coating some spoons to see the glossing effect. I've included a visual of the spoons. I drill a small hole in the handle of each one and place them on a ring. The spoons also come in handy down the road when I need to choose a color for a future project.
