"Omen" figures?
In both the Ford and GM "In Miniature" books, I noticed that the "people figures" were credited to "Omen". In fact, a number of them are currently available "Arttista" figures: GM book page 74 "golfers", page 96 "chauffer with bags", and Ford book page 57 "photographer". I personally spoke to the owner of Arttista last week, and he said he was unnaware of a brand named "Omen". Any info on this company or person? Thanks.
Omen figures
I don't have these, but I found several when I googled Omen figures 43 and Omen miniatures. They are in white metal, painted, very realistic, and seem to be less expensive than Arttista. I also saw that EWA was dropping the line. Hope that helps.
I have found them to be pricier than Arttista.
I believe they are made in England. They have appeared with several BCC annual models including the 2007 set.
Omen have been in the model game much longer than Artista.
They are based here in the UK and are available in unpainted and painted finishes. I'm assuming Jeff Brickett - who owns and runs Omen - is still in business. He was trying to retire some time ago but the demand for his models kept going up! The figures that go with the Club specials for the Brooklin and Lansdowne Clubs are all from Omen. I'll try to see if Jeff is still on the scene.
Just read Dick's posting - I'm repeating his information again!
The owner of "Arttista" unaware of "Omen" figures? Not likely.
I find that a little difficult to swallow. That would be like the CEO of GM stating
that he is unaware of a company named Ford! Sounds more like, "If I pretend
they don't exist, maybe they'll go away."
Omen Figures: an astonishing but little-known line
Omen Miniatures was started sometime in the 80s by Jeff Brickett in England. I believe he was a one-man operation, sculpting, and casting in white metal. He provided the figures both in unpainted and painted form. All the painted Omens are carefully executed in subtle colors, and can be instantly recognized by the very fine and convincing touches of black paint to the eyes and eyebrows. Other figurine makers have occasionally 'borrowed" some of his designs, like the James Dean figurine, ice cream soda waitress on roller skates, Enzo Ferrari figure, etc.
Over the course of 10 or 15 years, in the 80s and 90s, Brickett produced an entire universe of figures in 1:43! There have been more than 225 Omen figures made, although most know only of a few, like the ubiquitous Chauffeur figurine or one of the fashion models. But the variety is really astonishing. He has done gorgeously costumed Edwardian figures, people from the 20s, sitting and standing figures, boys, girls, dogs, cats, beautiful people from the 50s, young and old, sexy figurines, clowns, furniture, luggage...
The question is, is Brickett still active, and producing and selliing his figures now, or is he retired? He doesn't have a website. John Roberts may know more about this.
But here is a really cool contact: modelcarparts.com in the Netherlands seems to have a lot of these figurines, and you can see pictures of many of the wonderful items I've just described. I've ordered one lot of figures through Rob at the site and it came through fine. The only trouble is the high price of painted figures, averaging 25 euros. That's going to keep a lot of Americans on the sidelines for now. But you owe it to yourself to check this stuff out; I think these things really enhance the 1:43 experience.
Hey, John...we were posting at the same time!
Totally agree
Sounds like he knows that Omen Miniatures are a better product, which they are, in my opinion.
Jeff can be contacted on 01403 250851 or for our international cousins 0044 1403 250851. His figures are fantastic in my opinion and i don't feel the Artista ones come close. Jeff supplied me with 180 driver figures for the BCC club set for 2007 and 15 special pairs of figures to be given away at last years AGM, this always goes down well with the members that have attended. That was only last September, he was still in business then.
Joe, Omen Miniatures are also available at .......

Thanks Mo...I was hoping someone from BCC would respond!
Thanks to you I now have Jeff's number again as I lost it when I moved.
Omen "not known"
I found it a bit odd, as well, that the Arttista owner did'nt know about Omen...especailly since Arttista has been in business for about 20 years. Can I assume Omen is 1:43? Arttista is 1:48, to cater to the "train folks". They also make a smaller selection for "S" gauge 1:64. However, I feel the 1:48 Arttista figures work well in 1:43 cars when you look at a figure's head in relation to the top of a convertible's windshield.
No doubt that the Omen models are better and closer to 1:43 in scale.
We used Arttista for SFBBC models because they were located close to two of our members that handled arrangements with them, they also were quite flexible with our quantities and cheaper!
We must remember that not all people are the .......
same height! Therfore, one could mix 1:43rd and 1:48th scale figures without much concern.
However, the same cannot be said with vehicles!
