Wait, 1962? But it looks like something from the 1950s, you might be thinking. Indeed the first rendering by Ford stylist John Samsen was prepared in January 1954. The initial concept featured gullwing doors, hidden headlights, and an air cleaner protruding through the hood (like several 1960s muscle cars). After building the car on a early T-bird chassis, the project seemed to have languished until 1962, when a 405 hp, 406 cu. in. V8 was installed, the car named Cougar, and it hit the show circuit (now without the planned hole in the hood). By 1963 it was repainted red (perhaps by Dean Jeffries) for an appearance in a Jack lemmin movie. Today it's in a collection, somewhere. Matrix also makes the red version.

Great write-up, Harv!
Really cool Ford dreamcar and fine model of it, too.
