A few weeks ago I was contemplating a bid on an auction for a GLM Vincent van, the 'brother' of my GLM J&B Vincent van, but the previous owner had removed the RR radiator shell and replaced it - rather shabbily - with a Bentley radiator shell.  The red GLM had been on my list for some time and I thought I could buy a 'donor' RR and do a transfer, thereby restoring the red GLM to its original glory.  I passed on it, due to the advice of a couple of members (Randy Rush and Chris Moroni), but I was later disappointed I had not taken a shot at it, when the winning bid was very reasonable.

The two of them suggested waiting and even though the prices I saw on the only two that appeared on my radar were wallet-busters, I sat back and did my best to be patient.  Then, this one popped up at a very reasonable price and it is on its way from France to be with its 'brother:'

It goes to show there is a time to walk on your own and a time to listen to the veterans.  Thank you, Randy and Chris.  Now, we just have to hope it arrives intact.

Thanks for the story about your purchase decision. Looks like a nice model.

'Bad news, bad news, come to where I sleep...' (Percy's Song, written by Bob Dylan, also performed by Arlo Guthrie)

The van arrived yesterday morning and as soon as the courier handed it to me I knew it was not going to be a pleasing moment, when I could hear something inside rattling about.  The box was in very good condition, so refusing it would have cost me a return fee.  When I opened the box I found a considerable number of styrofoam sheets packing the model's box very securely, but when I pulled that out, I could see what was creating the noise: the model had broken loose from its base and had been bouncing around inside during the two-day journey from France.  The mascot was so severely damaged it is in seven pieces.  Yup.  Seven.  It took my 80x magnifier to identify all of them.  Both mirrors were off and the right rear quarter roof trim was banged up.  This model is not a lightweight and I was surprised to find it was only mounted on two screws, instead of three.  Within two hours I was refunded and when I offered to repack the model so it could be returned safely the seller told me to keep it as a 'consolation' for not receiving it in good condition.  It will take a bit of micro-work to tidy it up and I will have to find a 'donor' model for the mascot.  Disappointing, but viewed from the right perspective, it was not the end of the world.  Here are two pics of the vitrine, to show how much banging round the model did inside:

I will post pics of the repaired model at a later date.

@gdh sorry to hear that. Sounds just like Ebay Global Shipping to Australia!

Good luck with the repairs.

Exhilaration to disappointment to exhilaration to disappointment...it sometimes happens. Good luck on the remaining journey.

I just have to remind myself it is only a model and I'll be able to fix most of it in time.
