1960 was the last year of the larger engined 2.5 litre formula.

The first year of the 1.5-litre formula was dominated by a well-prepared Ferrari team - the 1961 season was the first time they made a mid-engined car, the legendary 156 "Sharknose" - going against team boss Enzo Ferrari's dislike of mid-engined cars and his old-fashioned belief that mid-engined cars were built by people who did not have enough horsepower. Only Stirling Moss, in an outdated underpowered Lotus, was able to beat the Ferraris on two tracks where his skills offset the Ferrari power advantage.

This particular Monaco Grand Prix turned out to be a classic, with one of the greatest driving performances in the history of Formula One by Stirling Moss in a privately entered Rob Walker Lotus against 3 Ferraris that had a lot more power but worse handling than the Lotus.Moss, drive one of the greatest races of his illustrious career winning the Monaco Formula 1 race for the second time in a row.

I was lucky enough to buy a diorama of this event showing Stirling Moss driving the Rob Walker Lotus 18, #20 with side covers removed for cooling, just as he passed a photographer  at the Grand Hotel Hairpin. This was made by S.M.T.S. in white metal on a specially made diorama made by them.

David, great write up and photos. That Spark model is nice, have to keep my eye out for it. I've been focusing my recent 1/43 purchases to F1 cars from the 50s and 60s. I think I'll try out my new photo booth today once it warms up a little more as I've got it set up in my unheated shed and takes some pictures of my latest purchases.

Hi Jeff,

I intend to add a post here on Forum 43 on Formula 1 in the 1960s. I'll do it over several days starting next week. If you get your photo booth running, you may wish to contribute.
