This 1981 Gurney AAR Eagle employed the "Bottom-Line Aerodynamic Transporter" design, (AKA: BLAT) that created a tremendous vacuum under the car that rendered the rear wing useless. This particular Eagle used a rented Turbo Cosworth V8 that because the center of gravity was so different that the Chevy V8s, caused numerous problems stemming from uncontrollable vibrations. Because the team was on a tight budget, many of the kinks were never worked out. The following year, the near fatal accident of Johnny Rutherford was caused when the shifter came off in driver Chip Mead's hands. This car ultimately went through many hands and was later involved in a California drug bust. It was found many years later in New England and has been restored in its "White Castle" livery.
@bob-jackman Yeah it is sad to see a dead eagle. When I saw this pic it immediately flashed my mind back to a time in my teens. I was out in the "back 40" hunting ducks when a cock pheasant unexpectedly flew overhead. With only dinner in mind I shot it and when I went to pick it up I just felt terrible that I had killed something so beautiful; that I had no right to do such a thing. It was the one and only pheasant I ever killed. It really bothered me, which is odd considering I was a farm boy.
Bob & Jack, I completely and totally understand your feelings about animals/birds, and their demise. This was the least offensive photo I could find of an eagle. It was on a site that advocates for their safety from less than ethical hunters.
Though I hunted in Texas for many years, I always had the proper respect for any animal that gave up its life for food.
And while pheasant is absolutely delicious eating, it truly is a beautiful and majestic bird.
Model by TSM in 2009 and signed by Dan when he was amongst the living. This is the Spa winner from 1967 and is the only modern F1 win by an American driver, with an American car, and an American team. I say 'modern F1', since Jimmy Murphy's Duesenberg won the 1921 French GP. I especially like the bluing on the exhausts.
