If you’ve had enough of my VW pictures,  read no further. But if not, here is the first Type 3. It came first as a two door sedan dubbed  “Notchback.” I can’t remember last Tuesday yet a sighting on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware,Ohio in October 1963 when I was 18 is etched in my memory as if it were yesterday. There was this strange little sedan with the VW emblem on the front and the hubcaps. But it was’t a Beetle. I never saw another one for a couple of years but this time it was a wagon and these began to be very popular. It was VW’s idea of a larger car for those who had out grown the Beetle. After the notchback was introduced for European market and Canada the Squareback and Fastbsck were imported to the States and they sold in large numbers.

But here is the Notchback.

Minichamps, and now MaXichamps have done the Notchback.

My wife had a 63 Notchback when we got married in 1965. She bought it in Germany and toured Europe before shipping it back to the United States. We really liked the car but maintaining the car was expensive since parts were hard to get since the model was never sold over here. Great writeup David , and yes, I have the model.

- That's a great looking model David, very nice pics!

- I used to see a few here & there, but never realized they weren't "officially"  sold in the States.  🤔 🤔

I love all the VW 1600 body styles; not sure why as they're a bit plain looking, but there's just something about them......
