Interestingly enough, station wagon bodies were supplied to GM from ‘46 through ‘64 by Ionia. Instead of “Body by Fisher” embossed on the door sills, “Body by Ionia” nameplates identified the builder of the body that was then shipped to GM where a Buick front clip and chassis were waiting.

Ionia also did woodies for a number of manufacturers back into the 1930s.  Other makes as well, including this 1954 Dodge Sierra four door wagon.

Great old station wagons!  Thanks, David and the rest of the gang, for bringing them alive with these good posts and fine pictures.  I have several and like them, too.  For a really good history of Ionia and the several other builders of these wagon bodies, see:

This is an historical site that I have found of interest and solid information.  Enjoy!

(LATER) Please forgive a quick snap, but here's my favorite wagon.  It was built by Henney.

I found the second picture on the web, and there was a little note of a 1/43 version of this "woody" being proposed.  Does anyone know of it?

Yes, John, I now have seen it. It is, just like Ionia, a beautiful creation!
