Here's a 1:87 English Tramcar I found stuffed away in storage.  (Click on photo for enlargement.)

I'm not sure how this got into my 1:43 collection, but I just wonder if it is of any interest in the "smaller than 1:43 world."

Hi David,

These Preston trams are fairly popular as additions to British 00 railway layouts. Many of the original Models of Yesteryear were close to 1/87 scale and it was only with later issues that they increased in size to 1/43 and sometimes larger. As you know, fitting the box was more important to Lesney and later Matchbox company owners than exact scale.

Here are a few more variations of the Preston Tram. It was even sold in a window display case unassembled and complete.

I like the Moko Lesney Matchbox line, cars, trucks, motorcycles, industrial vehicles, buses and trams.  I have a pile of them and admit they are a great source of nostalgia for me.

Not a Matchbox issue, but a Promotional Model issued by Cadbury Typhoo Limited. for it's TYPHOO tea brand back in 1985 for the 100th Anniversary of electric trams in Blackpool, Lancashire, England. I have kept it in its original package. Scale is certainly less than 1/87.

I must have gotten this one in the late 1960s as it still came in the yellow box. 130:1! 😮

Nice one Paul. I have it also but lost the box years ago. I think that I have at least one of all the first issues but only a few boxed. I really like these early Models of Yesteryear by Matchbox.

Check your base plate. The black was standard but the first ones were grey and quite rare now.

The base plate is black. I only have that part of the box, as I would cut out the description and place it underneath the model for display.
