AEC Mammoth Major Ergo Cab Tipper Lorry ‘Douglas'
Matchbox introduced this neat little 1:92nd scale lorry in the first month of 1969. Original version was in this ‘Douglas' livery but during the following year this was changed to ‘Pointer'. Technically this model was an updated version of the Foden 8-wheel tipper lorry in ʻHoveringhamʼ livery. The AEC cab featured windows and plated parts which the Foden didn’t have. The tipping action was the same in both models too featuring Matchbox's "Hydrosleeve". This enabled the tipper body to be held in any position and replicated in miniature the hydraulic movement of a real tipper. In late 1970 the regular wheel ‘Pointer' version was replaced with one with ʻSuperfastʼ wheels. Eventually this fine model was replaced by a Citroen SM in 1972.
Leyland's new Ergo tilting cab debuted in 1964 and was praised for comfort and driver visibility. I remember these were popular lorries back in the day and were seen as tippers, artic tractor units (semi's) and petrol tankers.

It looks excellent, Chris ! Certainly a hard-worker and also the model has some great features. My Matchbox "dump" truck (an Americanism, I believe) is a Bedford truck in grey and deep red. Perhaps the scale is close to this one.
