In 1953, Lesney, later called Matchbox started sales  with a miniature coach and horses for Elizabeth IIs Coronation.

In celebration of the anniversary, current Matchbox owner, Mattel is paying tribute with a special-edition Matchbox seies. There are seven different assortments - one for each decade with seven in each set - feature new castings of iconic models such as the Jaguar D-Type, Porsche 911 and a Routemaster bus with a Union Jack.

These highly detailed miniature vehicles sold  in vast quantities over the last 70 years. By 1970, over 100 million vehicles were sold each year.

Here is a preview of the 70th anniversary issues, all due out in 2023. I bought my first ones yesterday. Pictures come from Top Gear.

They look good. Do you plan to buy them all?

I'm sure these will be a big hit with collectors, but Lesney crafted the Queen's coach & horses in 1953, not 1973.

HA! I see that you JUST NOW  corrected that. 😀 😀 😀

Hi  Ed,

So far I’ve got the Jaguar D-Type, MGB Coupe and the Routemaster bus. I will probably end up with about half of the 49 offered. Some may be harder to find than others.

@david-green

Thanks. Could you do a close-up photo of the MGB coupe? I am familiar with the real car and would like to see how good the model is.
