@charles-rockett 😄 I posted this in the lounge for more than the 43 folks but here you are my friend:

@frank I did notice but was also intrigued by what one might be driving in such a sorry state of mind. Let's hope the little MG doesn't wind up in the drink!
Rather sad and pensive.
I found it more about the circle of life and discovering the beauty of the journey!

I agree with you that it is about the cycle of life, but that this particular traveller's journey is only a part of that continuing cycle: out into the see and back into the clouds and the rain upon the earth. But I cannot help but see the ferryman - as in the myth - as easing the end of this particular traveller's journey. Albeit, in peace and the completion of his understanding.
@charles-rockett we’d have to discuss this further (and many other things) over a nice cold stout or “a bowl of hot punch.”

@frank That sounds good my friend, but British though I am, I come from the colonies (! ! ! !) so mine would be a scotch on the rocks or a G & T.
The Seekers recorded a very old English love song (15th. Century) 'The Water Is Wide' which bears relevance to your song only in reference to the river - and its thoughtfulness. But I post it here because it is very beautiful. The copy I found on youtube contains cine film of The Seekers on board ship and so its best not to look whilst hearing the song as the boat and bikinis are not of Tudor England! On the other hand, it's fun to watch, especially for me as my family went back and forth fairly regularly by liner (or VC10) at this time.
The late Eva Cassidy, Luka Bloom, and indigo Girls (live with Jewel and Sarah McLaughlin) are other great versions of that song aka Waly Waly ( the River is wide).
Tom Rush, one of my all time favorites, has this River song
