When the 61 Furys were first introduced I didn't like them but today I think they're great. I have 1/43 scale models of the hardtop, convertible and station wagon.
Exner's last hurrah before his chickens were plucked. It's a spaceship.
Well it appears that modern day Toyota's and Lexus cars like that spaceship look.
Concur 100%...many new models have that spaceship look...and I don’t like them.
My critiques are that the grille needs to be blacked out (like the one below) and that the rear taillight panel is almost as ugly as the ‘60 Edsel...
If the '61 Plymouth looked as it does in the photo you share, I'd have been appalled with the entire car. The cut-out rear wheel-wells and the entire grille and headlight treatment on your example would have been a complete turnoff to me. But I know it's all in the eyes of the beholder.
@georgeschire George; wasn't the "chrome" headlight surround an option you could order? I don't care for it myself, but I do quite like the black out grill mesh.
I don’t really remember these when introduced, but I was a newborn. Today I love them. I’ve seen a few, unfortunately they are not that common. I am guessing few have survived.
I do have some 1:43 models too. A sedan, hardtop, wagon and in May, a convertible will join them (thanks Buz) they are so unique.
Just one mans opinion, the grill is butt ugly just like the present Lexus line is ugly with the similar grill. Like CC cars '55 - '60; dislike, with the exception of the Chrysler it self, '61 - '64; love '65 - '72.
@al_dorado I recall you saying it was hit and totalled while parked outside the family home. I'll bet at the time you were quietly happy to see it go. Lol.
@al_dorado, my family had a brand NEW '61 Plymouth Fury 4-Door Sedan, Black with Red interior. Loved that car! Then in 1971, my Dad had a Tan 4-Door Sedan he used as a beater. I love that car too!
Funny story with the Tan car, it really was a beater, as it went through a Hilex size bottle of oil a day!!! When the car was started up, a flurry of BLUE smoke would blow out the rear end. It was so bad, that one morning when I started it up, the guy who lived across the street from us was waving a White Towel out his front door. He told my Dad that the car could be used as a military weapon against our enemies.
LOL, but that minor issue aside, it was a fun car to drive and it purred along the highway like nobodies business.
