.... not too many "younger folks"  care much anymore, or even realize how the world changed forever.   Like Garfield's assassination in 1881, McKinley's in 1901, or even "25 other"  historical events of the late 19th century and all of the 20th, December 7th will one day too be nothing more than something to read about.

But for those families who will be forever connected to Pearl Harbor, this day will always mean a little more.

Many years ago I went to the U.S.S. Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii. It is a stunningly beautiful and awe-inspiring location as it stretches over the remains of the big battleship. She remains on duty, as do over 1,000 sailors still aboard the ship.

Thanks for this post Chris! Yes, a day which will live in infamy.

The Arizona Memorial is moving. We spent a day there in 2011. Me over the Arizona, with the Missouri in the background:

I’m a U.S. Navy “Vietnam Era” vet; I’ve “manned the rails” of the U.S.S. Nimitz (CVN 68) multiple times (like photo #1); I’ve worked as a DoD contractor in support of the U.S. Navy for the last 45 years & I’ve visited the U.S.S. Arizona memorial three times…it’s tied for 1st place (in my book) with the Tomb of the Unknown as THE most moving memorial ever!

America RULES!

Thank you for that service Terry! Couldn't agree more - both the USS Arizona and The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier left us speechless and more patriotic than prior to experiencing them.

Concur 100% - I’ve visited the Tomb of the Unknown about 1/2 dozen times myself (the benefits of living in the D.C/Baltimore area since 1978)…

I’m proud to have served worthy people like you & everyone on this site!

@terryslekar

I also served during the Vietnam Era - US Army 1967 - 1968.

A pic I took of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and another at Arlington National Cemetery:
