Insight to what might have been had the EDSEL been allowed to live.  Like the car or not, it is an incredible story and part of automobile history.

When EDSEL debuted its 1958 models in the Fall of 1957, it did so with no less than 18 different models.  I've personally always contended that, that may have been some of the problem, one never discussed, right from the start.  Why 18 different models?  Why not just an entry-level EDSEL and a high-end EDSEL.  And I add that, it should have been that way for every brand within the ranks of the Big Three automakers.

Having so many different models for each of their cars, they ended up competing with themselves, rather than with their other company competition.  What I mean by that is this.  Ford Motor Company should have concentrated on beating their rivals at General Motors and Chrysler Corporation, and each of those companies should have done the same with regard to each other.

Be that as it may, and whether you liked the EDSEL or didn't like it, it's fun to ponder "What if?".  One thing is for sure, without the EDSEL, all of us car lovers would have one less car to talk about, and talking about old cars is what we all like to do.

I do love the '60 Edsel. Although it is a more subdued style from the '58 & '59, I find it very attractive. They have always mystified me and I am thrilled to see one.

Here's one of my several in 1:43.

I like the front design of the 1960 Edsel but, imo, the rear styling is bizarre.

Bizarre might be right, but I've always thought they had sort of a "customized" look to them.  And I like them because they are completely different from the '60 Ford's taillights.
