While watching the Andy Griffith Show, I spotted this "thing" in one of the frequently used Ford Falcons.
It appears to be some sort of vertical make-shift device (of material, foam & wood) placed over the driver's side of that bench seat. No one I know can identify it.
It certainly doesn't appear to be any type of factory option. Can anyone please explain exactly what this is? Was it an aftermarket headrest? Was it a "blooper," left behind by the crew?

I would guess it is exactly as you say; a headrest bought quite separately - perhaps advertised in a newspaper or such. The extension down the car seat would give strong support for the head, when the user's back and shoulders were pressed against it.
