I remember filling up the tank in my 50 Mercury and also two quarts of reconstituted oil and taking my date to White Castle and still having change left over from a five dollar bill. I was working in a drug store for 60 cents an hour.
It'll never happen. No one wants to carry their phone around all day!

You just might be right John. I purchased a drone for my phone to carry and follow me around. I 💓 that my pants pocket is soooo much lighter now 👍

.... years ago, I said this! 😏 Today, of course, I don't go anywhere without it. 🙄 10 years after that article, the first cell phone call was made in April of 1973.... the rest is history. The first cell phone I saw belonged to my friend - the year was 1986.
I wish I could recall the date but I vividly remember putting in my first "Car Phone". It sat in its own cradle between the front seats and was wired to an antenna on the back window. I thought it was so cool. Thought the same about my first GPS!"No one wants to carry their phone around all day."

I remember seeing 1989 GM cars with phones options; most were mounted to underside of the front-seat armrest. It was kind of like a Get Smart gadget, and yes that included a rear window mounted small black antenna. I also remember seeing cheap dummy antennas in stores. Folks could peel & stick them to their rear windows for that status look. 🙄 🙄 I laughed then and I laugh now.... but millions were probably sold, so I guess the joke's on me! 😬 😬
Yep!! I remember the dummy antennas too. I always mounted my antennaat the corner of the driver's side top. The inside wire was hidden a little by being in the gap between roof liner and glass.
I now recall too, that they also refered to these as 'bag phones' since they were part of the entire carrying box and plugged into the cigarette lighter.
All of this technical advancement has finally prompted me to retire my shoe phone.....sorry Max, it's time for me to move on up.
Why would you want to call your shoes? Gee Jack; Get Smart. All of this technical advancement has finally prompted me to retire my shoe phone.....sorry Max, it's time for me to move on up.
I got my first cell phone in 1987 when we moved to Mississippi. It was mounted on the floor of my Crown Victoria with the before mentioned antenna mounted on the rear window. I thought it was cool although the only reception was around more populated areas where there were towers. As a traveling salesman, the phone was only minimally useful.
@perrone1 I call my shoes left and right but what's that got to do with anything? I think we need to discuss this shoe thing further Tony, but don't you think we ought to deploy the Cone of Silence?
@perrone1 C'mon now Tony, quit stitching me up; a cobble of guys like us need to get along. That blow was patently loafer a classy guy like you.
