Buying a car in Massachusetts - a question.
Hi folks, has anybody encountered a problem of buying a car in Massachusetts and taking it out of state? The DOT there does not issue temporary permits. They don't exist in this state. How would I drive it away? Thank you!
I would think that the selling dealer could answer that question. Also, your paperwork, i.e., bill of sale/contract, might allow you to legally drive back to your home state if you are 'out of state'. Check with your local or state police departments.
A couple ideas.
Here are several suggestions:
- Have the car shipped.
- Using paper work (title and bill of sale) from seller, register car in your home state.
- If you are friends with a dealer back home, it can be moved on his dealer plate.

There is nothing there on the topic.:(
Thanks.
Most states have what's called reciprocity agreements with other states...
In MA you have 7 days to get it out of MA or your responsible for there sales tax and registration fees. If you are buying from a dealer ask if they have what's called a "one way trip permit" Here in California these are available but you must drive the car straight to the California border if not you have to pay California sales tax and registration.
