ONE OF THE MILLION REASONS TO ININITY I LOVE MY WIFE

Below is the first "Wrestler" book I ever added to my collection back in December 1974. It was a Christmas gift from my wife Lorraine, with a great story behind her buying it. You have to remember that back then, books could only be purchased at bookstores. We didn't have any internet, no Amazon, or other on-line capabilities.

So Lorraine went to B Dalton Books in the Rosedale Mall in Roseville, MN to buy the book and surprise me for Christmas. Now here is where "the great story behind her buy buying it" comes in.  When she asked the clerk at the store for the book, she gave the title as being, "The Life and Times of Gorgeous George". The clerk checked the stores inventory list, and told her there was no such book. She was disappointed that she was apparently not going to be able to get me "the perfect gift" for Christmas.

However, clever as she is, she got me in to a conversation, asking me, "Who was the first Blonde professional wrestler?". I told her that it was Gorgeous George, and in fact there was actually a book supposedly coming out titled "Whatever Happened to Gorgeous George?". She went back to B Dalton and this time, was able to get the book.

On Christmas morning, yes I was surprised and I loved her story and effort in buying it for me. Of course I still have it and it means the world to me because of her thoughtfulness. All these years later, she is more precious than the book of course, but I will never part with either.

Nice. I also remember real book stores. In the Chicago area we had Krocks and Brentaros. Originally in downtown, they later expanded into the suburbs. It was one of my favorite stores to visit. The Marshall Field department store in downtown also had a great book section. Memories, memories.

It is sad that so many folks today do not get (and some choose not) to enjoy the Bookstore experience.  If nothing else, just browsing and seeing all that is offered on the many shelves throughout the store.  Of the big bookstores left, Barnes & Noble is one of the last.  I learned early in life that when one reads a book, they are opening their mind to a massive world of adventure, mystery, fiction, non-fiction, and dozens of other incredible places to enhance enjoyment.

I agree. There are still a few Barnes & Noble stores in the Chicago area. Whenever I go to one, I always buy something, even if just a cup of coffee and a magazine. I feel like I am doing something to keep them around.

Interesting you mention about buying something, if for no other reason than to help a book store stay in business.  Funny thing, I do that my banking as well.  Having worked for 35 in banking, now retired, I've refused to do any on-line banking.  I go in to the bank to make deposits, make withdrawals and whatever need I may have.  I've told the Tellers and other employees that I'm trying to do my part to "save their jobs".

Nice story George. Never underestimate the ability of a wife when it comes to finding out what they are looking for.
