Fondly remember listening to many of those songs on good o’l WDGY….WEEGEE in Mpls Minn.’
WDGY? I grew up with that station and KDWB. Not to mention, KRSI, WYOO, KTCR, WLOL, and the Good Neighbor WCCO. Do you still live in the Twin Cities Larry?
Though I think I'm in the minority on liking the '58 OLDSMOBILE, I have always loved the car bumper to bumper and all the chrome in between. The example in this photo is absolutely breathtaking! I'd take the keys to it anytime!
@jack-dodds, you and I are on the same page with the two-tones being a knockout. Overall, I thought GM's '58's were strikingly beautiful.
Personally George I just cannot make myself like the styling of the '58 Buick and Olds; especially the rear overhang on the Limited. But so what...I'm glad others do like them and I enjoy seeing them at shows anyways.
I the first place I have never drank coffee or beer in my life, not even a swallow.
1958 in my opinion was the worst year for styling/design in the American cars. How could they go from beautiful '56 & '57 to so obtrusive in '58 &'59. Here are probably the 4 most prominent:
Cars for me:
From the beginning to early to mid 1930's they are now mechanical art, which I enjoy checking out how things were done bach then, but not transportation.
Early '30's to early '40's I liked the round top 2 doors coupes quite a bit; my father & uncle raced stock cars of that vintage.
Early '40's to late '40's I don't care for the designs/styling or mechanicals.
Late '40's to early '50's are just very cool old cars.
'55 to '57 I like a lot.
'58 to '60 I dislike.
'61 to '71 I love.
'73 to early '90's NO THANK YOU
Of course these are generalities and there are good & bad cars in every year & every make.
My favorite that I like the styling/design of, by manufacturers/year [again very general]:
1948 to 1954 Hudson
1957 GMC
1961 to 1964 GMC
1951 to 1956 FoMoCo
1960 to 1970 FoMoCo
1965 to 1971 CC
1968 to 1970 AMC
Don't care for sports cars, they are impractical for every day life and too small/low for my body and too expensive.
Don't care for luxury cars, they are too excessive in everything including cost, for my taste.
Don't care for trucks, station wagons, or four door sedans, they are work vehicles and were every where, hence I have little interest in them, please remember I said little but not no interest.
Give me any 2 door, hardtops 2 or 4 door including station wagons, convertibles.
Every vehicle before 1973 is interesting to me. When I say I like or dislike a vehicle it means to me would I buy it or not. Just my personal hang-ups.

Bruce; I like most of the particular vehicles you mention and agree in general about most cars made after 1972. One comment you made reminded me of how much I would like a quality model producer (Goldvarg for example) to produce in 1:43 scale the Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks from 1961 through to '67 inclusive. They were very stylish and very different in appearance from the competition.
Car styling sure brings out the opinions of everyone. We all have our favorites and no-so favorites. That is what makes our love of the automobile so much fun! I personally, with but just a few exceptions, would take any 1958 or 1959 over any 1957 car style anytime. I thought '58 and '59 were "out there" styling, but they are cars that were different and cars that we remember.
Being fair, every model year has it's good and bad lookers, and sometimes it's those not-so good looking cars that garner up the most conversation and are best remembered. The '62 Plymouth comes to mind for me. It's a car that when new, I remember thinking it was the ugliest car from the Big Three I'd ever seen. But that was sixty years ago, and today, that '62 Plymouth has grown on me. I'm not saying that it is now a nice style in looks, but rather it is a car that made me take notice of it when new, and still does today.
In that there is a fondness of it, that I've come to have. And of course, there are many other cars that I could say that about. I'd also point out, that there are cars that originally appeared to be so gorgeous, and today, they don't appear that way anymore. It's time and perspective.
