The Plymouth stylists likely gathered to celebrate that they'd succeeded in getting rid of the "to the moon" Fins that graced the '60 Plymouth while downing many glasses of merriment.

THEN OMG!  They realize that yes, they got rid of the Fins, but forgot to put taillights on the brand new '61.  What to do?

After several more drinks and deliberation, they grab a couple of Flashlights and tack them to the fenders.  Problem solved.

Deceitful

That’s exactly my issue with the rear end of the ‘61 Plymouth; the front end was almost as bad…until I saw a rendering done in black…

Always loved 1961 Plymouths for their kooky Venus styling ("flashlight" taillights and all) 😎

I never had a problem with the intriguing grille for the time period.  But those "tack-on" taillights just didn't make sense.  They appear to be an after-thought.

The design does generate comments.  Here are two photos of the 1/43 scale Highway Travellers 1961 Plymouth station wagon.

Looks like they are made out of porcelain.  Is it?

You and I are almost on the same page.  I like the '55 and '56 styling a lot.  I'm just okay with '57, '58, but NOT fan of the '59 and '60 look.  I actually like the '61 (even with those "flashlight" on the side).  As for the '62, originally I was appalled at the look of it, but time has mellowed me and I've now come to appreciate the weirdness of the styling and find it a car I'd like to have on my shelf in 1:24.  I like the '63 which rebounded nicely from the weirdness of the '62.  I'm sort of lukewarm with the '64, but think the '65 is beautiful.  From then on, I think Plymouth hit homeruns until the end of the 60's.

I concur about the ‘63 & ‘64….my first car (owned) was a ‘63 Fury - I loved it then & still love it now (50+ years later)…the ‘64 front clip turned me off, but the rest of the car (especially with the introduction of the “sport” roof) was gorgeous…the ‘65/‘66 Belvedere/Satellite was drop dead gorgeous…

To me you are looking at a design ahead of it's time.  I think it is masterful.  If they made this in 1/24 I would hunt it down and make the purchase.

The early 60s Plymouths polarized opinion but they are a real treat to see a car shows now.
