Okay I admit it. I like these Mercury Land Yachts of the Seventies! I remember TV's "BARNABY JONES" (played by Buddy Ebsen) driving similar cars and the show was overrun with not only these Mercury's, but also Ford's and Lincoln's. Â
They were luxury, that's for sure! They cruised along big and bold, but they were comfort on wheels. And that hood...I'm certain a Boeing 747 could safely land on one. Â
This article by RICHARD LENTINEELO is a nice trip down memory lane. I'm enjoying the ride!

I owned a 73 XR7 yellow with white vinyl top. Â White interior. Â Last of the mustang based smaller ones. Â Traded it in on a new 1978 F250.

I had a 72 Cougar with the 351 Cleveland; dark metallic green with tan interior. It was a nice car and quite fast; I put a shift kit in the automatic trans.
@frank Frank; I recall almost buying a new 73 Cougar XR-7. It was a beauty; copper with off white leather interior and white vinyl roof. It was $5100+ CDN. I decided it was just too expensive at the time (lol) and sprung for the 72 I mentioned in my other post. I liked the look of the 73 better than the 72; although they were quite similar.
Â
George; my Dad had a 78 Mercury Grand Marquis; silver with silver vinyl roof and dark red interior...460 gas guzzler. It was awesome; a real freeway cruiser. Â
@jack-dodds, that 351/4V was a potent engine. Your green Cougar must have been a screamer. I remember those interiors, a few cuts above the Mustang. Great cars! But...weren't all '72 Cougars green? I think they made 300,00 green ones and about 7 or 8 brown. Or was it the other way around? I know there was a guy in Arkansas who claimed he had a factory-made white one but I never saw any photos. If there was a white one, I'm pretty sure Jay Leno has it now.Â

So the question is does anyone make a decent 143 scale model of these?

Very attractive cars. Like these and the early generation Cougars too.

@sizedoesmatter. In 1968 I remember being in awe of the '68 Cougar. It was weird because when the Mustang debuted I didn't get goose-bumps over it like most folks did. I liked them, but it wasn't that "I sure wish I could have that car" feeling. But when the Cougar's arrived on the scene, I got that "oh man, now this is a car that I'd like to own/drive". I remained a fan of them even when they started to get bigger and bigger. Â

@jkuvakas Yes, that's correct....150,000 dark and 150,000 light green. Bunch of gold and brown and a smattering of reds.

@brush My favorite Cougar is the original 67, although I never owned one. I thought they were gorgeous, even prettier than the Mustang; especially the interior. I did own a pale yellow 68 but unfortunately it had the tan interior; I would have preferred black. It was a car brought up from Oregon and to my initial surprise it had a 3-speed manual trans and factory air....both unusual for my part of the world. I recall one afternoon pulling out of my local service station, wound it up and power shifted it into second; whereupon the flex tweaked the heater core and cracked it....immediate steam everywhere....and our hero's red face stuck out the driver's door window, trying to guide it to a safe stop. That was expensive.
