Kelly and I were in Turkey a few years ago. We watched a guy at a pottery do something much like this. The ease and precision are incredible! All done by hand, no measuring, and the pieces fit perfectly. We also got to see a roomful of women hand-painting dishes and pottery with amazingly intricate designs.

Amazing how accurate an eye the artist has for size compatibility.  Making money in the pot business honorably.

@jkuvakas Do you recall if the asking prices for the hand painted dishes and pottery were reasonable John?

I'll bet they were comparable to high street prices.  In today's world of monopolisation where the small producer is ever more squeezed out, a major opening to the market is not having the vast mark-ups of the mass market.  In fashion there used to be a rule of thumb; 100%  wholesale, 100% retail. Today that rarely falls beneath 500%, albeit the wholesaler for the most part, has been cut out of the loop. I guess these guy's can earn enough for a comfortable lifestyle, doing what they do and not charging 500%!  It's also the incentive to work fast, efficiently, and without fuck-ups!

The plates were $40-50. Pottery could go from very cheap to very expensive. They had a room where there were about a dozen women sitting around a table. Each had a variety of paintbrushes and a palette of colors. I had never thought about this before. But, once I saw how it was done, I was amazed they could sell them so inexpensively. There were no machines. Nothing was automated. Just a group of people sitting around pottery wheels, another group painting the pottery, and yet another group manning the ovens.
