Sometimes I think that GOD gave us vowels just to mess with us.

Steve

It was always the "and sometimes 'Y'" that boggled my mind when it came to vowels.  The English language isn't consistent with sounds either.  Love that "Bow" and "Bow" can be pronounced two different ways.  And let's not forget the "To", "Too", and "Two".  How about the "i" before "e", but then it doesn't apply to "neighbor".  A list can be made that is endless.

George,

That was some great points you made !

I've always been amazed when new U.S. citizens are able to grasp those differences in the English language the way it's spoken here.

@100ford2003 Living in France, I believe they gave us vowels so we wouldn't know what the hell was happening.

And with our goofy English language, let us not forget all the "silent" letters.  I always wondered why, if they are silent, why they are in a word at all.  And about the letter "X"?  Most often it is pronounced with a "Z" sound, so why can't a that starts with "X" and sounds like a "Z", just start with a "Z"?  And one of my head scratchers is "PH" sounding like an "F".  Hello!  There are so many others that are weird, it's a wonder any of ever learned to talk and spell at all.
