OMG....a car for the price of a meal out for two today! I know it's all relative but .........
In 1953 I bought a 37 Studebaker Dictator sedan for $25. The car was clean and a good running vehicle. in 1956 I bought a 1933 Pierce Arrow for $780. In the fifties people wanted new cars not old prewar relics.

The key sentence in your statement is, "I know it's all relative but...".
As awesome and impressive as those prices look today 88 years later, we must always consider that the average annual income in 1938 was (around) $1,750, while today in 2026 it's (around) $74,738.
That $429. car in 1938 would cost approximately $9,800. to $10,000. in 2026. Due to significantly higher consumer prices, $1 in 1938 had the same purchasing power as roughly #23.07 today.
Fact is, the dollar has lost about 96% of its value since 1938.

@georgeschire Unfortunately, you are correct.
Sadly, so often people are awing over the lower prices of a bygone era, but they never take in to consideration the lower salaries of that era as well.
