Car manufacturing was such an intregral part of Australian economic and social life.  I think I've posted these before but I believe these pics sum up what car manufacturing was, and is now. GMHs plant at Dandenong in Victoria was so busy it had its own rail station on a suburban line. Heres how it was in 1957 and how it is now.

These giant manufacturing facilities are wonderful for the jobs they produce and the dollars they pour into a local economy while they last but it is very sad when they close their doors. I'm originally from the St. Louis, Missouri area. Growing up we had a Chevrolet plant, a Corvette plant, A GM plant, a Ford, Mercury plant and a Chrysler, Plymouth plant...today there are no plants left in the area.
