In 1949, Mercury and the Canadian Monarch introduced totally new styling. The Monarch was the name given to the Canadian version of the Mercury. They were similar in a number of ways and could usually be identified by their different front grillwork. One additional difference that I was not aware of, is the Canadian Monarch was offered in two tone paint combinations starting in 1949. An advertisement of the 1950 Monarch highlights the two tone paint scheme that was available as an option. It was offered only on the Monarch apparently  because the low production numbers in Canada allowed it.

Great post!  Ken; I'm not sure about 1949 but the '50 Ford also offered the same 2-tone paint job.  The only colors I ever saw were the 2-tone brown as shown in your post and 2-tone green.  I knew a fellow who had such  a brown '50 Ford 2dr. and I also recall trying to buy a beautiful 2-tone green 4-dr. one from an old gentleman.
