Hi all,
I am new to The Diecast Zone, and I am trying to understand using the site.
Is there a Search for other than "products"? I don't want to bother others by asking or telling something that has been covered before.
Is there a WTB (want to buy) area?
Is there a place that discusses these types of questions? Is there a FAQ related to use of the site?
Thanks,
Jack
Hi Jack, Welcome to the Diecast Zone. I enjoy myself here, and I'll offer a few suggestions. Just don't think of them as absolutes.
In the past, we haven't done a lot of buying and selling here, but that will probably be changing with our new auction activities. I just bought my first 1/43 model on it! Now I'm trying to figure out how to pay for it.
Generally, we tend to designate our comments by the scale of our models. My area is 1/43 and so my pictures and comments center there. But the Lounge is open to all, and we never know what will pop up here.
Pretty often someone posts a "want to buy" and usually someone else will suggest a site, dealer, company, or somewhere else. I guess some one-to-one sales result, but I'm not familiar with such. As you read the sites, you will become more used to the talk here.
I probably spend a little too much time with the history of our models (and history in general, maybe), but that's the danger of being one of the seniors. Some of the members have really tremendous holdings compared to my few hundreds. Others, it seems, tend to buy mostly the new stuff, while others are still trying to find items produced several years ago. The search is sometimes more fun than the possessions. I like to read the metal versus non-metal talk but I have bought and cherish several different components. I'm also enjoying building models in my scale, even though not a lot of others seem to do so. I get lots of encouragement, though.
So settle in, Jack. Find your scale(s) and enjoy yourself. Right now I'm going back to the new auction site and try to figure out how to pay John for that model! Enjoy!

(And don't be surprised if the next opinion disagrees with some of my comments. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't happen.)
Thank you, David.
I have been collecting for a few decades. I started with 1/24 altho’ I have several 1/18, but when I saw I would possibly be getting a sizable number of them, I concentrated on 1/24; mainly Bburago and Maisto. With cabinet space once again an issue, I switched to 1/43, and except for a lot of Franklin or Danbury Mint, that is where I remain. Also, I do have approximately 100 1/64 models; I only buy them when they are accurate representations of 1:1 cars I like. I have a display cabinet for them on the way from Carney Plastics. I haven’t purchased any high-dollar models: The more reasonably-priced have satisfied my needs. I recently figured an average of about $50 per car. The most I have paid was for the 1:12 Gurney Eagle that won the 1967 Spa F1 race. The vendor was having a 35% off (!) sale so it became a no-brainer.
I buy mainly sports and racing cars although I have categories for speed record cars, rally cars, sedans, and “oddballs”. Also an area for my favorite toy models. I have owned a 1:1 1958 MG Magnette for 3 years, so I have a few MG’s of various scales; thus my avatar.
I recently decided to rationalize my collection with better display of categories. I added a couple display cabinets, got matching spice racks for stair-step display, and added lighting. I have also begun populating the collection to fill holes, and just to buy items I have wanted now that I have begun getting more serious.
Another question I have come up with; is there an area on the site for photos of people’s collection? I like viewing them to get ideas for my own collection.
I like everything about The Diecast Zone. I especially appreciate the civil discourse in the forums. Also, David, I really appreciate the history. I have bought cars that, at the time, I knew my motivation, but I don’t always remember and, especially for race cars, I am now renewing my knowledge of their histories.
I have gone on long enough, but I did want to thank you for your welcome and information and say a little about my affliction.
Jack
Jack, David has covered the structure of the site so well. I'd just like to add that you will see some of the best model car photography in the world here. Welcome!
