JB, the creature is a scorpion, they are very sensitive when called "spiders". Boring name though, "Isometrus Lithophilis", Isometrus who loves rocks ... how about Isomertrus Aculeus-acuti-longus or Isometrus Bigus-pseudo-dickus.
What is with all the running around, screaming and firing weapons already? Just let go a huge cloud of Raid......kills 'em dead!
The plot is too simple for top-grossing movie, and will violate the Chemical Weapons Convention. Apparently conventional weapons are more humane method for killing extraterrestrial arthropods. In other words, this is what people want to watch.

Imagine the actors, running screaming shooting fake weaponry against imaginary enemy in front of green screen, since all these CGI creatures have to be added later. Not an easy job, the results are spectacular though.
Back in 1954, I went to see the movie ‘Them’ about mutant giant radioactive ants. Not been too interested in bugs since then.
Them............is an out `n` masterpiece ....as a grade school kid, just try watching THAT,alone, on a 12" B&W in the dark basement of a two story house
.......has a SINGLE soul from this thread given even a CURSORY look a the entirely scientifical page I linked when I started this Furshlugginer post?.....how about ultra-violet lighting.............did Caspar`s bugs have that at least???

Yes, I did. I can't begin to tell you how many times I, and family, got stung by scorpions. Suffice to say, I don't need the old variety, and certainly not the newbies, in my life again. (Baking powder, mixed with small amounts of water and 'pasted' onto the bite area is all that helps)
