That's what happens when you do not read the instructions.

Sometimes bad things happen to good people and almost every time bad things happen to dumb people.

20251021 125912

I bought my 1966 Bird in 2014, Charlotte NC, and had it shipped to me in Ottawa Ontario.  The previous owner had done some extensive restoration work on it back in 2000 & less than 1,000 miles before my purchase.  I tracked the auto transport truck where it crossed the border near Montreal and it cleared customs, 1-1/2 hour drive from my home.  Then the truck driver turned off the tracking & it disappeared for two weeks.  The company excuse was driver first had personal issues, then he went to a funeral (with a truck full of cars?).  What should I expect after paying $2,800 to ship the car?  When I received the car, then being a perfectionist (not so much now), I thought it needed some minor tweaking.  So off to "restoration" shop #1.  A little adjustment to the ride height (raise the rear 1-inch), power antenna adjustment (leaned 1/2-inch and not acceptable).  A month later and $$, I received the car & it leaned about one-inch lower on one side.  Back to shop #1, another month, now the other side leaned lower & I had a new front suspension squeak.  Enough of shop #1, and off to "restoration" shop #2.  I will just say shop #2 fixed what it was there for, but lost a hubcap (all four had previously been restored) and it cost them $ to get a new set of four.  Back to shop #2 once again to get issues sorted.  Of course, the car stayed in shop #2 for weeks.  Soon afterward, all was nearly perfect and I was off to my first auto show.  Top stuck going down. Had the car flat-bedded to "restoration" shop #3 near Montreal.  Weeks turned into months, I spent $$$ on the newest conv. top circuit stuff.  Shop #3 said they raised & lowered the top 20 times, perfect & fast.  The car was shipped back to me, I lowered the top, it stuck and actually bent the trunk lid (lid unique to only the convertibles).  Shipped back to shop #3, two months later finally back to me and I could enjoy my so-called restored T-Bird, just in time for winter storage & second year of ownership.  I enjoyed the car for some summers, then the COVID year (only drove the car about 50 miles in one year). Retired in 2021 & moved back to the States (VA). Again, paying top dollar, to ship the car to the States and transport company would handle import issues, etc.  I received the car but unfortunately the driver left all the important, stamped import documents at the Canada/USA border crossing.  So it took two months to get the paperwork straightened out so I could register my Bird in VA.  What should I expect from an internationally known auto shipping company after I paid them more than $3,000?

Strange but true, during this move I drove my Camaro, with two cats, over the border and imported the Camaro with all the signed documents in less than 30 minutes.

It should be obvious by now, if you read this long post, I love my 1966 T-Bird convertible.  Sometimes I have felt it is my obligation to protect this car from so called "restoration' shops.  Owning a 60 year old, somewhat complicated convertible, has taught me patience, and perfection is only a myth.  I joke/laugh my Bird has covered more miles in a transport truck then I have driven it myself.  Today the weather is warm, plants are in bloom, I drove my yellow Bird top down and felt 50 years younger.  I only felt younger until I got out of the car and tried to walk!

Sorry for the small picture, I haven't posted pictures for years.

There are so many ripoff artists/tradesmen out there these days, no matter what the object needing repair/resto is.  So important if an individual is in a position to know who to trust in their area or if they have associates with personal experience who can recommend.
