"Metropolis" was an astounding science fiction movie for it's time, and now, too. Some of their transportation conveyances and the general tone of the picture was amazing, and even more so in the silent era. "Nosferatu" was another silent era picture with an eerie, dark atmosphere about it. Glad to see they have restored and expanded the extant Fritz Lang "Metropolis" film.
In the late Forties and Fifties, sometimes "atomic" power was used as a basis for horror/terror movies, with memories and realities of that time, sometimes combined with the flying saucer and outer space and coming space/rocket flight as additional elements..
In many of them transportation elements ranged from everyday to the futuristic, science fiction type of object. Both General Motors and Ford certainly could feature such genres in their futuristic designs and Harley Earl, at least, was alive to it's possibilities !
@mikedetorrice I agree about GM and Ford of course, but IMHO the same can be said for Spaceley Sprockets and Cogswell Cogs!
@mikedetorrice Good observations, Mike. Not having known '50s culture, but looking back at it, it seems cars, kitchen appliances, electrical goods; indeed all industrial design had to be space-age or it was passe. Regarding the atomic bomb, there's even a Bill Haley - and his Comets - song (Thirteen Women) in which he and the thirteen women are the only survivors of a nuclear holocaust - in his dreams! (I used to listen to this and dream of the Futura!)
Lol, well I guess Bill Haley and the Comets could find at least an upside and some humor to such a catastrophe ! Reminds me as bit of a Twilight Zone (?) episode in which actor Burgess Meredith. as a bookworm, finds himself the only survivor of a nuclear holocaust and sitting in front of a gigantic public library ! He has "all the time in the world" and thousands of books ....... but he accidentally stands up ............ and crushes his needed glasses.
