This seems completely reasonable and a natural progression to me...now why can`t they run to the takeout for me?

HA! That's actually nothing new (in theory). YEARS ago, certain dealers installed remote "lock-out" devices that rendered a vehicle useless should the high-risk installment buyer miss a payment. I believe most States, but not all, subsequently outlawed such devices.

If Ford can do it, so can clever thieves. They can have it drive itself to the dockside and into a container headed overseas. Convenient and little risk.

we just need Stephen J Cannell to dash out a screenplay about a crack team of young hackers with bad attitudes who send squads of pre-paid self drivers to make a 3am run to the docks

I regret to inform you Officer Toody, but the "self drivers" referenced above are self driving cars
...... perhaps something in the craft services or chaplain related taskery might suit you?
