Heres why: The rumour is that Gergiev started using a toothpick to conduct because his movements whilst conducting were so violent that he was in the habit of losing his grip on the baton and it would go flying into the audience or the orchestra."

interesting Geoff.....my early expectation was for Gergiev to toss away the toothpick as the volume and density of the composition increased

Great thread, terrific Beck version thanks Frank. I enjoy seeing/hearing great contemporary artists doing classics. Love this Rick Wakeman version of Pachelbels Canon.
