IMO, it does look that bad; I've seen worse. I would remove them, however.

Nope nope nope…..to my eyes those wheel openings are just to large to have skirts slapped on them

Not on this one, please.
The skirts do not match the clean, crisp design of the car, they give this beautiful car a certain "european flair", IMHO.
