I like both cars very much but give the nod to the comparatively edgy design and flashier trim of the Oldsmobile.

I too like both but preference goes to the Oldsmobile this time.

@david-green I recall that many people disliked the Mercury grille but I thought it was cool; it seemed to have a bit of a sinister expression to my eye.

These are not getting any easier! Thanks for another great comparo, John. I never cared for the "skegs" on the Olds and Caddies of this vintage. But, in a very close vote, I went with the Olds.

Love the '61 Mercury, dislike the rear view of the '61 Olds.  Love the '62 & '63 Olds. '61 I love the Pontiac, Ford, Mercury.

The tail lights of the '61 Olds were my favorite feature of it.  They looked "sunken" because of the body shape surrounding them.  Lol.

The early 60's Olds Starfires were among the top attention-getters. In that color combo, I am compelled to vote for it - just gorgeous!

The rear fenders look like they belonged on the '61 Buick to match the front of the Buick

61 Buick Electra 225

and the cut out on the top of the rear fender & trunk just does not look good to me. Just explaining my opinion.

The Olds for me. I restored a 61 Starfire several years ago and loved that car. Mine had every option available including power windows, power vent windows, facrory A/C, speed control, signal seek radio with foot control, power antenna on the right rear fender, Autronic Eye auto headlight dimmer, power drivers bucket seat, power trunk release and rear air suspension which I replaced with coil springs.

You're quite right about the pointed nose having a similar shape to the tail of the Olds; I never noticed that before.  Good eye Bruce!

The "pointy" fenders were the turnoff for me.

MERCURY!  Even though Mercury was back to sharing the Ford body, it looks way better than the pointy fender Oldsmobile.  1961 with the exception of Chevy, was NOT a good year styling wise to my eyes for General Motors.  They corrected this in 1962.
