Anybody interested in the (US) car business, should know that during the eighties the relation between Ford and Firestone Tires turned really sour, when the tires on several Explorers blew and very serious accidents occured, where many people died.
Ford put the blame on Firestone and vice-versa and with that a relation that spanned many years, ended.
With that in mind I purchased a 1:18-scale Welly-made Ford Explorer and put a Firestone-plaque right next to it.
Mind you, the tires on the model are nameless.
With this the models in my collection not only depict American cars, but many tell their story......
But hold on.....here it comes..........
This afternoon I decided to rearrange some models and decided to move the big Ford to another place.
After I had purchased it some time ago, I took it out of the box and it got its place on top of a dust-cover, in plain air.
Immediately I noticed that the model just would come off.....the tires just melted the area where they touched the cover.
As far as I could see, the tires had sunk about 2 mm into the plastic of the cover, leaving a clear copy of the tread-mark.
And all because Welly used a lot of softener in their tires.
So in a way, Ford Explorers just keep having problems with tires, be it a real car or a scale model....
Do you have a story about your models, too ???
I have had quite a few model cars do that to their cases.
Firestone's Granddaughter married Ford's Grandson. Different relationship than FoMoCo and the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company.
One has nothing to do with the other, IMHO.
