The Turner Prize is awarded annually to British artists who are considered to have made "the greatest contribution to the visual arts over the past year". Here is the front runner for this year's prize.

What is the world coming to? Or am I just an ignorant philistine?

Mind you, I think it's maybe a bit more interesting than last year's winner, but then, what do I know?

The Greatest Contribution to the Visual Arts? Really? Well I must be an OLD and unappreciative Philistine.

Well, it did occur to me that maybe the man devoted seven years of his life to crocheting that beautiful doily, and being a homeless drug addict who lives in his Ford Escort that was his only way of displaying it. So maybe I misunderstood the reason for his being nominated for the prize. But I don't think so.

I don't think so either Graeme. I've seen better looking fishing nets than that dowdy doily.

Almost as ridiculous, undeserved admiration as Warhol's silly contributions; this one in particular.

@jkuvakas

The wife and I beg to differ JK; we feel we have a certain artistic sophistication to contribute and, to be fair, we even buy Campbells soups.

p.s.  That is a toga I'm sporting......weekend wear only.

@jack-dodds, I feel I must apologize for overlooking the level of your sophistication and refinement.

"I feel I must apologize...."

I sense a lack of ownership in this statement...but thanks just the same.

You may have a point there.

Easily done. I made the same mistake myself, but then I am prone to judge by appearances.

Awareness of one's shortcomings is the first step on the long and winding road to perfection Graeme.

Never a truer word. But the path to enlightenment can be a steep learning curve - as your own progression through the educational system so amply demonstrates. That is not a criticism, by the way. Think of it more as an expression of genuine admiration for someone achieving success in the face of almost insuperable odds.
