Well I was 24 in 78 and with a steady paycheck at the early stages of my Coast Guard career, I bought my first new vehicle, a 78 F250 Red Custom heavy duty, for my part time home repair work after the Massachusetts Blizzard of 78.

I was 26 this year and did in fact buy a new Firebird exactly like this one.  At that time I also had a '67 identical to the 2nd pic....should have kept it.

Top 3 from the everyday man category, excludes pony cars.  Pretty slim pickings in this era

You may not believe this but it's true. I was minding my own business, sitting next to the trail eating a Honeycrisp apple. All of a sudden a stage coach happened by and somehow - I'll never figure how, they dropped a strongbox. I yelled and yelled but they did not hear me. I tried emailing the stage line to tell them that I found the loot but never heard back from them. I waited over 15 minutes but nary a word. So what was I to do? I felt it was divine providence that I was supposed to use the cash for something good. Now I don't know about you; but, to me, a Ferrari GTO is mighty good!

@perrone1 Hmmm.....maybe the coach hit some of those boulders you set in its path.  Well you obviously tried your best so your conscience is rightfully clear but the GTO is a big step.  Personally I'd have eased into the newfound affluence...maybe bought a whole bag of Honeycrisp apples.

I did turn 25 in 78. In November 77 I bought my first new car it was a Scirocco special edition they either call it a champagne edition or a sidewinder edition which actually had a curled up snake decal on the quarter panel at the rear which I peeled off cuz I didn't like it. The edition was all white blacked out trim with Recaro type bucket seats. The dealer had put 50 series tires on it and was absolutely beautiful. Kept that car from November '77 till summer of 85 when I sold it to buy a new Maxima, the 4 DSC... 4 door sports car. Lucky for me Summer of 85 there had been a auto hauling strike I believe in the Long Beach or San Pedro harbor and while I was waiting for my car to be delivered Japan had turned over and started manufacturing the 86 Maxima so I got the 86 at the 85 price. It had a beautiful 3 liter V6 along with a 5-speed. Loved it so much that I traded it in on an 88.

Remember when their ads called the Pacer "the car of the future"?
