This afternoon I was looking at my Herbie VW, thinking of installing a driver, and that led me to another topic:  famous movie cars.  Here's what I mean:

840

EP 150339965

This car was the true star of the 1937 movie "TOPPER."   No, I didn't see the movie in its first run, and the short-lived television version of the '50's did not have this magnificent dream car in it.  Well, one episode featured a Metropolitan. But this 1937 Buick-based car still makes me smile when I see a mention of it (which isn't very often).

If you're interested, here's a good account of the 1937 movie car:

Does anyone else have a favorite movie car?   As for my Herbie the Love Bug, that's a project for another time.   Enjoy!    David  Laugh

Okay, John B, I had to scratch a little but came up with it:

Duel, Steven Spielberg’s first movie, is a feature-length chase that pits Mann and his Plymouth Valiant against a souped-up diesel. Dennis Weaver of McCloud fame plays Dave Mann, an instantly sympathetic protagonist, a guy just trying to get to a business meeting who’s menaced by a homicidal truck driver for reasons unknown.  Steven Spielberg was only 24 when he directed the 1971 film, an impeccably made thriller with only a 16-day shooting schedule.

But our dear moderator has stumped me.  That gold GM-looking dream car just doesn't jog my movie memories.

Pete, I confess to not seeing this one in its entirety, but I recognized National Lampoon's Vacation, shot back in 1983. Chevy Chase starred as Clark Griswold, a father and husband who wanted to spend more time with his family, so he decides to go on a cross-country expedition. In order to enjoy the expedition, Griswold purchases a vehicle, which is dubbed the Wagon Queen Family Truckster.

That Mercedes driven by Robert Mitchum in the 1978 version of The Big Sleep was impressive.

The car that Philip Marlowe (Robert Mitchum) drives is a 1954-59 Mercedes-Benz 220 S ponton cabriolet convertible.
