During World War ll, the United States produces an unbelievable amount of weapons and war material for itself and it's allies. The automobile companies as well as aircraft and engine producers all geared up to turn out materials, some in specially produced giant factories.

Here is an aerial picture from 1943 showing a plant outside of Chicago built to make Douglas 4-engine C-54 transport airplanes. It was built in an apple orchard and known as Orchard-Douglas Field or ORD. It is better known today as O'Hare International Airport, aka call sign ORD, for many years the busiest airport in the world.

Cool!

Puts me in mind of "The Secret City". Not far from me, here in east Tennessee, is the Secret City, Oak Ridge, TN. Home of the Manhattan Project. Today it's home to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and American Museum of Science and Energy dedicated to the education of the atomic age launched by WWII.
