CAUTION: ONLY READ IF YOU'RE BORED!
In January of 2009 I figured I could fabricate an "up top" for my 1/18 Motor City '48 Chrysler T&C using the top from Anson's '47 Cadillac. I quickly realized MC's bulky dog-leg trunk hinges would interfere with a top.
So.... I FIRST needed scale trunk hinges. I could pirate something, but it was easier to put the project on hold. 😆 😆 Then... about 7 years later (c.2016 ) Sunstar acquired MC's dies & molds and re-issued the '48 T&C. It now featured photo-etched emblems, proper wood panels, AND CORRECT trunk hinges.
But I'm too cheap to spend $75 - $90 for two tiny hinges (that's all I wanted - who cared about the car? ) So, I waited for a parts car, mis-marked, damaged, etc. A few weeks ago, I score a MIB for $20
Once I compared Sunstar's to my original MC (from 2005 ) it became obvious that I'll be working with the Sunstar - it's superior. Now - 16 years later - I can finally begin "adjusting" Anson's '47 Cadillac top to fit my '48 Chrysler. Afterall, I can fabricate anything, right?
Still with me?
After 5 hours of work the top was still "off" by too much. Then it hit me, "Maybe the top from Maisto's 1950 Ford would work better?" I have several on hand for parts....
It's better but even after "adjusting" it still wouldn't quite match the look of a 1:1 or even the crude look of my 1/43 examples.
At this point, I'll just scratch-build a top - then I know IT WILL MATCH! OTOH, I've always wanted a 1948 Chrysler T&C sedan. 🤔 🤔
Q: Perhaps I could use parts from my Signature '48 Chrysler convertible - that's rotting from diecast cancer - or my Signature '48 New Yorker sedan - with its ridiculously tall roof?
A: No, not really. The project would involve a ton a fabrication - I'm also lazy! 😒 😒 It would be easier just to buy a 1/43 '48 T&C sedan.
Q: So... Where does this leave me?
A: Kind of right back where I started in 2009. 😔 😔 Stay tuned, it might take another 16 years. 😧 😦
Wow, man! Professor Moroni strikes again!!!
All I can think of right now is the song by David Soul...."Don't Give Up On Us Baby" 🤣
It will look great in a top-up form as it already does as a convertible. I have Motor City Classics Chrysler Town and Country in top-down form and also had Signature's nice top-down regular Chrysler until it was struck by intergranular corrosion.
