Still a leader back then when released and was a winner for me..

these came out back when I was just starting my first online diecast business and also sold at an indoor resale market. My late wife, at the time, was a Mustang lover and went nuts over this little diecast. She was the best salesperson for these showing anyone who was interested all the features on the models and there were many for that time, at reasonable price too. Outside of my new Challenger releases I think that Red Mustang convertible was my biggest seller back then. I remember ordering 24, then had to order 36 more and sold all 60 in about a month if I recall. She sold 75% of them and one of my original customers, I still talk too, still has his he got from her back then. This was the finger fun winner for the $59.95 price back then. Great pics and thanks for the memories.

For sure, one of the greatest 1/18 Mustangs ever produced...but oh those STUPID wheels!

I know...

Why are the wheels "stupid?"

The profile is all wrong, the whitewall width is wrong, the wire rims look cheesy. It's this model's (IMO) only true weakness (aside from not having an up-top).

Still though... an excellent replica with, as John noted, tons of finger fun such as a moving shifter and dangling keys. Yes, 1/18 scale ignition keys! Always loved that!

For me, I've never been impressed with this model. In 1:18 scale, I think...

... the Autoworld is lightyears better with greater accuracy. And I have to admit, that it might just be my perception as most likely, they're the same mold.

Also, the Mustang didn't have a 289 for the 64 1/2 model. It was a 260 and the 289 wasn't available until 1965. Of course, like the Ertl, the tires are just wayyyyyyyy wrong.

Inaccuracies aside, a very well done model. Suspension. Steering. Ride height. Finger candy all the way around. I like the wire wheels that it came with, correct or not. It remains, today, one of the best 1/18th models in my collection.

Cool model packed with details. I ended up buying the black '65 GT (same mold, though release as an Ertl Authentic), as I love the color combo.
