The SSP (Special Service Package) was a special light weight designed for police use. The 5.0 HO V8 was bumped to 225 HP giving 0-60 in around 6 seconds and a top speed of 135 mph. It had a strengthened chassis and floor pan, upgraded cooling system and a larger alternator to handle the extra electronic components. Special 4 lug 15" wheels with wide 225/60-15 tires. The light strengthened bodies are still sought after for drag racers.
That is a 1986 Mustang LX, it has the quad headlights in the front, the HP was 200 in 1986 with only 270 lb ft of torque, it was carbureted as Ford had not yet put fuel injection in the Mustang on the 5.0, the 1985 model year had 210 HP so 10 HP was lost in the 1986 model year. When Ford added the fuel injection the HP jumped to 225 with 300 lb ft of torque in the 1987 model year.
1987 and newer all had fuel injection and they had the single headlight on each side.
@john3976 It's not supposed to be an LX. The SSPs were produced from 1982 to 1993.
I recall seeing them on patrol for a while. Now, it seems everyone has gone to the Charger.
@rich-sufficool Rich, all the Mustang patrol cars were LX's even the trunk on your copy has LX on it, Ford added a police package to them. My old department the Florida Highway Patrol used the same Mustangs. Look at your diecast and you see the air cleaner on a carburetor, the fuel injected engines have the "L" shaped intake manifold on them. FHP Mustangs were also carbureted until the 1987 model year as well when Ford changed over to fuel injection.
Here is a photo with the hood open showing the fuel injected engines.
1989 was the 25th anniversary of the Mustang and we bought a GT convertible. The car was to be my wife's so the salesman assumed she would want an automatic...he was soon set straight that was not the case when she said a car like this should have a manual shift. We kept the car 21 years and ended up selling it to a friend's son who had been wanting to buy it for years. He promised he would take good care of it...two years later he came back in town and the car looked like it had been in the demolishing derby which made me sick.
Maybe we're talking about the same thing, SSP was a package of both upgrades and deletions for weight.
@rich-sufficool I'm not trying to be argumentative, I drove these Mustangs with them being different years, from the 1986 model which was carbureted but only put out 200 HP and 270 lb ft Torque, 1987, 1992 and a 1993 as assigned units. The 1986 was a quad headlight like your example above with a carburetor, then from 1987 forward Ford changed over to fuel injection like the photo of my FHP Mustang above. All of them were SSP packages but the carburetor models were less HP and Torque. The fuel injected models were when they were rated at 225 HP and 300 lb ft Torque.
Over all they were a fun car to drive with the 5 speed manual transmission, I had a VASCAR unit in mine which is a time over distance speed measuring device that is accurate, I was able to clock my unit in moving measuring mode at 137.8 MPH that was all it would do as aerodynamics took over.
One night me and another unit with a Mustang were out west on US 41 in West Miami near Krome Ave, and I was following when we both opened them up, while drafting behind the lead unit when we hit 137 MPH I was still gaining speed and pulled into the inside lane of the four lane roadway and was able to just pull in front of the other Mustang by a fender length but it was like hitting a brick wall from the wind resistance and that was all I could do.
I also drove a 1984 LTD II with the old blue bubble on the roof for a blue light, that car would top out at 124 MPH, those cars were hard on the front brake rotors as they would crack after a few fast hard stops when pulling over people for speeding. The 1984 LTD II was my first assigned patrol car. I put 121,000 miles on it in just over a year before it was taken out of service.
@rich-sufficool I like the quad headlight Fox body better than the one piece headlight that replaced them. The quad headlight set up just really works for this car.
@john3976 I'll never forget seeing the all new 1979 Mustangs. I was a kid when a neighbor bought one; I was very impressed. It was quite a "step up" from the smaller previous version. And yes, those quad lights looked pretty cool. 😎 😎 😎
