a most unusual road race
I was, I'm embarrassed to say, binge watching "The Monkees" yesterday. This one had a racing theme with the normal ludicrous plot. There was one really cool Dean Jeffrey hot rod in it, but the big showdown was a match road race between the Monkeymobile (Top down) and, I kid you not, a Cobra Daytona coupe, Guardsman Blue with white stripe. It, of course, had to lose because it was driven by an evil Prussian officer in period uniform with spiked helmet.
The WWl era black "Iron Cross" was applied to the front roundel.
I know when their racing days were over, the Daytonas were almost disposable so it was quite a trip to see one used as a movie prop. When the hood was open, you could see the 8 trumpets sticking out so it was the real deal.
The episode was between late '66 and early '68. I forgot the exact date of that episode.
I've always found it interesting how cavalier we were with some of those old cars from that era.
That old adage, "If we only knew then what we know now" applied to lot of old iron. Case in point, who woulda thunk that a Hemi-Cuda would be worth over $2 Million Semolians? Back in the day, Hemi-anything was junk that the owner couldn't WAIT to unload! Split window 'Vettes were worthless as well! The Shelby Cobra was no exception too. A lot of them were converted for drag racing! We just didn't know what the future value would bring to these cars.
Absolutely. In 1979 I bought a '69 Hemi Charger for $600. It was beat, but it ran and drove. Ended up pulling the motor and 4 speed and selling for $1200. Junked the body. Not uncommon for those days. Also picked up a very clean yellow '68 Charger, 383 2bbl auto, for $275. Resold for $600.
Who knew?
