In 1959, a group of Chrysler engineers decided to get into drag racing. The were well versed in utilizing the "long horn" manifold from the Chrysler 300 series and the stuffed all the goodies they could into a '49 Plymouth business coupe called "the High and Mighty". It inspired my buddies and I to do the same to the same car with a 331 Red Ram Hemi we got from a junkyard. Well we soon realized we had gotten over our collective heads and with no money for professional help, the project died. Meanwhile, the real engineers were rocking my world with their super stock powered by the ram inducted 413 the Beach Boys were singing about.... and the "Ramcharger" legend was born. Utilizing an automatic transmission and sporting 7 Candy Apple Red stripes, the Ramcharger Candymatic was to me, the coolest stock car on the planet. Now a factory sponsored race team, this car was to be shown off at the NY Auto Show. Once delivered in Manhattan, it was to be driven through the streets of Downtown all the way to the show at Lincoln Center. Unfortunately, the car was so quickly and badly set up that it barely ran and after a few stalls, was unceremoniously towed to the show. To me, as a kid, it was like my dog died.
I was kinda tickled when GMP turned their reborn Hemi Challenger R/T into a Hodges Dodges tribute car. It's displayed with the original 413 and a AWB 426 car.
