Upon ascendancy the Chancellor in 1933, Adolf Hitler established the National Socialist Drivers Club (NSKK) the provide government subsidies that would guarantee dominance in the European Grand Prix circuit to tout German engineering superiority. The bulk of the budget went to Mercedes and Auto Union both for racing and land speed record cars. BMW was coming into its own in endurance racing with their 328 roadsters. The model below (#109) had just won the grueling 1938 Mille Miglia going back to German Racing White over their fellow countrymen's silver arrow look. BMW and the NSKK saw the potential the 328 represented and eyeing the streamlined ultra light (superleggera) of the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Speciale, went to its Axis partner at Touring of Milan to craft a similar body in 1939. This one-off car handily won the 1940 Mille Miglia cementing BMW's dominance in the 2 liter class. The Roadster and the coupe by AUTOart:
