In 1939, BMW went to Germany's Axis partner, Italy ,specifically Carrozzeria Touring, to build a streamlined Berlinetta body for Le Mans and the Mille Miglia. The design is very similar to their Alfa Romeo 2900BMM car:

It came in 5th place at Le Mans that year, but in the war marred 1940 Mille Miglia, it handily took first place.
